Supporting Digestive Balance in IBS
What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is considered a functional digestive disorder. This means symptoms are real and persistent, even though structural damage may not appear on imaging or scopes.
With IBS, the digestive system often struggles with regulation. Movement through the gut may be irregular, sensitivity can be heightened, and communication between the gut and nervous system may be disrupted. These patterns affect how food is processed and how sensations are perceived. There are several recognized IBS subtypes, including:
IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D)
IBS with constipation (IBS-C)
Mixed IBS (IBS-M) with alternating bowel habits

How IBS Often Shows Up in the Body
IBS symptoms often fluctuate and may affect more than digestion alone. IBS symptoms include changes in bowel habits as well as symptoms that can affect energy and daily functioning. For some patients with IBS, nausea, appetite changes, or weight loss may occur when digestion and absorption are impaired.
The most common symptoms of IBS we see include:
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Bloating or fullness after meals
- Diarrhea or constipation, or alternating bowel habits
- Urgent or incomplete bowel movements
- Excess gas or abdominal distention
- Sensitivity to stress, caffeine, or dairy products
- Fatigue or brain fog with ongoing symptoms

Understanding What’s Driving Your IBS Symptoms
IBS symptoms usually don’t appear without reason. For many people, they develop when systems involved in digestion fall out of balance. Identifying which patterns are affecting you helps clarify what your body needs to heal.
- Bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine (SIBO)
- Lingering gut inflammation after food poisoning or illness
- Imbalances in the gut microbiome
- Food sensitivities or difficulty tolerating certain carbohydrates (FODMAPs)
- Histamine or mast cell activation increasing gut reactivity
- Slowed or irregular gut motility linked to the nervous system or hormones
- Gluten or lactose intolerance, including celiac or non-celiac sensitivity
- Stress-related gut–brain disruption affecting digestion
IBS Treatment Focused on the Relief You Deserve
Irritable Bowel Syndrome treatment works best when it’s tailored to how your digestion is actually functioning. At Flora Naturopathics, treatment is designed to calm digestive reactivity, improve regulation, and support steadier bowel movements over time.
Our care focuses on addressing what’s driving your symptoms. This may involve reducing gut irritation, improving digestion and absorption, rebalancing the microbiome, supporting motility, and calming the nervous system so the gastrointestinal tract can function more smoothly. As these areas are addressed, many patients with IBS experience fewer flare-ups, less food sensitivity, and greater confidence in daily routines.
