The Gut Health and Endometriosis Link and What To Do

I’m forever inspired by endometriosis patients and how committed they are to healing themselves at the root level. It’s not an easy task with this disorder.

Endometrial tissue, which usually grows inside the uterus, grows elsewhere in endometriosis, including the fallopian tubes and ovaries. It can also grow on digestive organs, and it’s commonly misdiagnosed as IBS. The symptoms can mimic each other: bloating, cramps, diarrhea, and constipation.

Many of my patients find that their diet and gut behavior are closely linked with the intensity of their symptoms.

Here are some things that commonly help gut health and endometriosis:

-Avoiding/minimizing dairy and sugar
-A low FODMAP diet (which has been shown in research to help with endometrial digestive issues)
-Addressing any gut imbalances (yeast, SIBO, dysbiosis, leaky gut) to help minimize gut inflammation and improve bowel movements
-Liver supportive foods and herbs to help eliminate exogenous hormones that contribute to endometriosis

Especially if you have gut symptoms that aren’t resolving, check in with your doc about exploring the possibility of endometriosis. Treating it appropriately can be a game-changer.
