Do Kids Get SIBO? Yes!

Did you know that the development of the intestinal microbiome begins at birth? This happens with an exchange of microbes from the mother to their child during childbirth.

But having a C-section or antibiotics given at or prior to birth can alter your newborn’s microbiome. Breast milk promotes the maturation of the infant’s gut microbiome, although, of course, breastfeeding isn’t available to all moms for various reasons.

These are all factors that can lead to dysbiosis which can later cause SIBO. There are other pre-existing factors than can cause SIBO in kids as well: constipation, reflux drugs, hypothyroidism, and lowered immunity.

Kids with SIBO will complain of tummyache; their stools will be irregular and you might notice a very distended belly. They might not to be able to tolerate certain foods like dairy and gluten.

Testing your child for SIBO is the best starting place and in my practice we use breath testing for kiddos over 5; for those under 5 we use stool testing, OAT testing and other evaluations to give us a picture of what’s happening.

Many parents prefer not to use antibiotics and the good news is that herbal therapies for SIBO are super effective, as well as addressing the underlying cause, which naturopathic medicine excels at.

If you think your child may have SIBO, our team of naturopathic doctors is happy to help. We love getting kids’ guts on the right track as early as possible.
