Healing PCOS Naturally: A Personalized Path to Hormone Balance

April 14, 2025
pcos

If you’ve been told your symptoms are “normal” or handed a prescription without answers, you’re not alone. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal imbalances affecting women, yet it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

At Flora Naturopathics, we believe healing starts with understanding your body deeply, compassionately, and completely.

What Is PCOS?

PCOS isn’t a one-size-fits-all diagnosis. At its core, it’s a hormone imbalance, but how that shows up can vary wildly. Most commonly, we see it present in one of two ways:

  • Insulin-resistant PCOS is related to how your body processes blood sugar and insulin.
  • Adrenal-driven PCOS is often rooted in chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels.

Some people experience both types at once. Knowing which category you’re leaning toward helps us better tailor treatment and testing to what your body needs. For some, it’s linked to insulin resistance. For others, it’s driven by stress and adrenal dysfunction. And sometimes, it’s a mix of both.

That’s why two people with the same diagnosis can have very different symptoms, and why your treatment plan should never look like anyone else’s.

Common Symptoms We See

A lot of women don’t even realize that what they’re experiencing might be PCOS because the symptoms can feel disconnected. Some of the most common ones we see  include:

  • Irregular or missing periods
  • Acne around the jawline or chin
  • Hair thinning on the scalp, but more growth on the face
  • Difficulty losing weight or unexplained weight gain

It’s also worth noting: despite the name, you don’t need to have cysts on your ovaries to have PCOS. The name doesn’t do it justice.

How PCOS Is Diagnosed

PCOS is diagnosed when someone meets two out of these three criteria:

  1. Elevated testosterone (based on lab results or symptoms)
  2. Irregular menstrual cycles
  3. Polycystic ovaries seen on ultrasound

Here’s the frustrating part: even if you’re experiencing symptoms, they can easily be overlooked, especially if you’ve been prescribed birth control, which often masks signs like irregular cycles.

The Real Root Causes

At Flora Naturopathics, we never treat symptoms in isolation. PCOS tends to be rooted in a blend of imbalances and outside influences:

  • A diet that spikes blood sugar and promotes insulin resistance
  • Chronic stress, which overstimulates the adrenal system
  • Underlying inflammation
  • Environmental exposure and family history

Through thoughtful, comprehensive testing, including cortisol panels, hormone metabolism, and nutrient evaluations, we uncover what’s really happening in your body.

Our Naturopathic Approach to PCOS

We believe in getting ahead of symptoms, not just reacting to them. Instead of defaulting to birth control, we ask: what’s causing the imbalance in the first place?

Healing PCOS Naturally: A Personalized Path to Hormone Balance

Our patients often start with advanced hormone testing and salivary cortisol evaluations to see how stress is impacting their system. We also assess nutrient levels, because missing pieces like vitamin D or B vitamins can make a huge difference.

Once we have the full picture, we can build a plan that supports your unique physiology, not just your diagnosis.

What Treatment Might Look Like

We don’t believe in Band-Aids, but we do believe in tools. Rather than strict diets or intense fitness routines, we focus on blood sugar balance through proper macronutrient intake, especially protein. Many women are overexercising, which only fuels inflammation. We guide you toward movement that supports your hormones, not stresses them out.

Targeted supplements like inositol and spearmint tea often help support hormone balance, alongside replenishing key nutrients like vitamin D and B vitamins. Every plan is personalized and adapts as your body heals.

Can PCOS Be Cured?

We get this question all the time. And while we don’t use the word “cure,” here’s the truth:

With the right support, many women experience lasting symptom relief and often taper off supplements over time. We think of supplements as training wheels: helpful while your body finds its rhythm. PCOS can be managed long-term with consistent care, nourishment, and the right tools.

Reclaiming Balance, Naturally

Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or have been navigating symptoms for years, you don’t have to do it alone. At Flora Naturopathics, we take the time to understand your story and create a care plan that fits your life.

Let’s uncover the root causes and help your body heal naturally. We’re here when you’re ready.
